Phishing is an attack by scammers to get consumers and businesses to provide sensitive information which can then be used to open new accounts or invade existing accounts. You receive an email that looks legitimate, possibly from someone with whom you already do business. It comes with a request to take some kind of action, usually with an unusual sense of urgency. Once you click on a link or provide information, the scammers can access your data and install malware that can lock you out and spread to your company network.
There are plenty of variations of phishing, including (but not limited to):
- Spear Phishing – Targeting a specific individual in an organization, often armed with personal information gathered beforehand to appear more legitimate
- Vishing (“Voice phishing”) – Using the phone to deploy phishing tactics
- Smishing – Using SMS or text messages to lure victims
- Whaling – A type of spear phishing that targets a senior executive
Tips + Tactics
- Be aware. Look for warning signs such as the urgency of the request, different domains, spelling errors, and incorrect content.
- Slow down. Scammers count on you being rushed or busy or vulnerable to urgent requests. Take the time to evaluate what is being sent and by whom.
- Verify before you act. Before clicking on links or divulging any information, use another method other than the one used by the requestor to verify requests.
- Use email encryption to help protect confidential information.
- Do not reply to emails, click on links, or download attachments from people you don’t know.
- If you own a business, train your employees, clients, and vendors to scrutinize the authenticity of every request.
Protect yourself from phishing by being aware and avoiding unnecessary risks.
