Most of us are familiar with the term “mugging”: street robberies that are often violent, or threaten violence, in an attempt to take something of value from someone. “Jugging” (or “bank jugging”) is a variation that targets bank customers specifically. Bank customers can become targets for criminals who observe their movements, habits, and cash withdrawal transactions, often at ATMs. These individuals may approach their victims immediately after they make a withdrawal. Even more concerning, they might follow victims to another location, hoping to catch them off guard.
Tips + Tactics
- Be aware. When withdrawing cash from an ATM or a bank, be highly vigilant and mindful of your surroundings and the people you see. Check if anyone is watching you, both in your immediate vicinity and beyond. Criminals are very good at sensing vulnerability. The easier target is the person who is unaware.
- Conceal your cash. After withdrawing your cash, don't display it or count it out in the open. Put it away immediately and avoid traveling with it for an extended period. Never leave large sums of cash in your car.
- Be discreet. When using an ATM, cover the keypad and dispose of your receipt properly after your transaction.
- Vary your routine. Criminals look for predictability and patterns. If possible, go to different branches or ATMs, and make your withdrawals at different times of the day.
- Remain alert after leaving the bank or ATM. Remember that jugging often takes place in a different location. If you believe you are being followed or otherwise targeted, go to a public place and call law enforcement immediately.
Protect yourself from jugging by being aware and avoiding unnecessary risks.
